# Reminders

A reminder is a time of day on a task's date, for when the time matters: a call that has to happen in the afternoon, or a free cancellation that ends at 12:59.

## A time on the task's date

A reminder is a time such as 15:00, in your time zone, on whatever day the task is scheduled for. Move the task to Friday and the reminder moves with it.

A task needs a date before it can take a reminder. If a task with a reminder goes back to the Inbox, the reminder stays but doesn't go off until the task has a date again. Move a task to a day whose time has already passed, and that reminder doesn't go off.

A reminder doesn't turn the date into an appointment. The task is still something you mean to do that day, as [Scheduling](/docs/scheduling) describes.

## When the time comes

Taskaid tells the assistants watching for reminders. What happens next is up to the assistant and what you've asked it to do: it can let you know, or pick up the next step from the task's note.

## Have an assistant watch

One standing request covers every reminder. An assistant that can watch for events sets it up once; for ChatGPT, see [Reminders in ChatGPT](/integrations/chatgpt#reminders).

Write what you'll need in the task's note, such as who to call or what to bring. That's what the assistant reads when the reminder comes in.

## From an assistant

Through the [MCP server](/docs/mcp), a reminder is one field on [`save_task`](/docs/tools#save_task):

- `reminder: "15:00"` sets it, as `HH:MM` in 24-hour time, on the task's `when` date.
- `reminder: null` removes it.

A reminder is refused if the task has no date, if its time has already passed, or if your time zone isn't known yet. At that time Taskaid sends the `task.reminded` event to subscribed assistants.
